I know what you mean. Over the last year (since I got my craigslist Performer with its cast-iron grate) I've been learning to grill with lump. It burns hotter, but it doesn't last as long or burn as consistently as KF. That's because it comes in irregular shapes and lacks the KF magic ingredients -- lignite, anthracite, limestone, starch, borax, sodium nitrate, and sawdust. :shock:
