I lived in Fredericksburg for a short time and liked 'Almons BBQ'. They have great pulled pork and a good vinegar sause. But there is another joint that gets more ink that started up since I left.

My wife and I had lunch at Pierces this summer after I heard rave reviews. We got there and I was impressed, the place was cram packed to the door and we still got our food very fast. Now, upon eating it I was disappointed. The sandwich I had had a sparse amount of pork on it, it was on the dry side and had hard bits through it. The flavor was very good though. The potato salad was also NOT homemade a big negative in my book for a Q Joint.

If you are referring to Virginia BBQ in Fredericksburg, keep on driving. I've never tasted such over smoked/bitter BBQ in my life and it's swimming in a tomato sauce.

There used to be a place on Market Street in Wilmington called "Skinner and Daniels" and they had a very good very traditional chopped pork sandwich! This was years and years ago, so I don't know if it is even there anymore.

Allman's has a reputation of being highly variable. I go to Fredericksburg fairly often to a motorcycle dealership there, and I've tried Allman's several times. So far I've hit it on the low end of its variable scale. Pork sandwiches and platters may be either "chopped" or "minced." I'd call the chopped "minced" and the minced "pureed." It would be a little better if the sauce had some flavor. If I go back, I might take a bottle of Scott's with me.

(Now if you want some good BBQ in Fredericksburg, come to the Morton's BMW open house in April or October. A guy named Art Crow, I think, from Boyce VA caters the events, and his pulled pork is the real deal. He even has a vinegar-pepper sauce you can taste. Test ride a BMW while you're there.)

I hate to hear that. I lived there in the late 1960's and the pulled pork (and especially the sauce) was out of sight. I was passing through on my bike in 2006 and stopped in. I didn't know if my taste changed or what, but didn't find it as good as remembered.
