Whenever I open the WSM to wrap with foil or check a temp or something lately it seems like my temp spikes pretty high after I put the lid back on. Any ideas why?

Gomer before you take the lid off shut the bottom vents. It should keep your temps from spiking. With the lid off and the bottom vents open it's sucking too much air thus fanning the flames below ;)

Leave it open for a few minutes.
Works every time for me to get the temps up. 8)

Gomer, try not to open the WSM if you dont have to. Get your self some wire temp probs like the tru temps, taylors or Mavericks. You will be able to see the temps without taking off the lid. After the spike, the temp will settle back down. You should do as much work under the lid as fast as possable too. Have everything ready.

Bill I work fast, but when I am cooking some meats like my ham I need to check the temp in a few areas even when my maverick hits temp, or like I said when foiling brisket or something of that nature. Thank you guys for the tips as always I appreciate it.
