Thats a great question. The first thing to concider is the equipment your cooking on. The WSM using the minion method doesnt need a lot of wood chips/chunks. I use 4-5 chunks per long cook. I may add another one twords the end. If your using a stick burner, I burn 4 oak logs to 1 flavor log. Grilling is another animal. I use a few chunks in my kettle when I am grilling. Hope this helps.
