Surface thermometer to check the temperature at the surface of the grill grate. Ive got meat therms.

Was just fixing to recommend such a gizmo..as I have a pal who got one. In fact he say Harbor Freight peddles them for under 50 bucks. The problemo according to him is you can't get any meaningful readings off the grate because its different all along the length. Best bet it to put a brick in it heat it up and shoot the brick with it. Just repeating whut he said.

I use one of these. Not surface exactly but close.

Hard to beat good old mercury, only problem so far is I have to clean it everytime I use it since the smoke makes it hard to read.

Just pick up a oven thermometer. Cheap, and will keep ya in the ball park. After all, It's not rocket science, IT's BBQ. Old school RULES!!
