Welcome to the best BBQ board on the net. Please post often and include the food pics. We love FOOD PORN here. Take your camera to the comp and show us around.
By the way, get the WSM. You can get about 3 for the price of 1 egg. And they travel much better. That would be all you need for a KCBS comp.

Christian,
Good to have you on Board!!
If it is a KCBS sanctioned contest "generally" NO, the teams are not vending while at the comp, you may get some freebies on Saturday after turn-in time if there are any teams that feel generous and give some of their Q away, however, usually, there are restrictions upon them doing so.
If it is not a KCBS sanctioned contest, then I would have no idea what other sanctioning bodies permit and don't permit.
One word of advice, when I went to my first comp several years ago I felt that most of the teams were pretty stand-offish, some here may say that's my fault (don't listen to them) however, around turn in times they are very busy and really don't have the time to talk BBQ or anything else. Don't confuse being busy with rude or ignoring you.
I found that late Friday afternoon and Friday evenings is when most teams feel their most talkative and are willing to spend some social time with the public....I think the consumption of alcohol has something to do with this.
Good luck and welcome, once again.

:welcome
Greenwood is a KCBS contest so the competetors might not have samples to offer, I haven't been to that one yet so I'm not sure. Some contests have a peoples choice, and others will have teams vending so you are likely to have top quality BBQ available.
As far as the WSM or BGE. The BGE is a more efficent smoker and can get higher temps at the cooking grate and maintain them for a longer amount of time. The negitives is they are very heavy and cost 3 - 4 times as much as a WSM. The WSM (my choice, I own 3) is still a very effecient smoker, vastly more portable and if you look around you can pick 4 up for the cost of 1 LG BGE. Also if you wish to compete you will need special equipment or many extra hands to move BGEs around. The WSM can be moved around by one person quite easily. I have done a full 4 catagory KCBS contest on 2 WSMs but 3 work much better.

I'm in Darlington, SC and a Weber Genesis with the smoker trey. I'd like to get a "real" smoker and am considering an egg or WSM.
I'm going to my first contest this weekend in Greenwood--just attending, not competing. I'm not really sure what to expect. Will I be able to get any competition BBQ if I'm not judging? Do the teams that are competing typically cook as vendors as well? Will any of you guys be there?
Happy to be here!

Hiya Christian welcome to the group. Ya cant go wrong with a WSM I have 2 and am planning on adding 2 more down the line.
Well you are always welcome in our pit anytime ya want at a event our next one to compete is in Abbeville October 12th-13th. Niki and I will be judging Smoke on the Beach , most events sell the pork as a fundraiser so you can buy some , my team and I sample the Q before it gets put in the turn in box. Never done any vending yet but thats a possibility.
