I'd guess just so long as it produces a fruit/nut and you wait till
it's seasoned/dry.... it should be O.K.
Personally have never tried Walnut

I have cooked with black walnut, but you can get allot of hickory in trade for a walnut Log at the mill. and I mean allot!

Here's an excerpt from BBQ dan

WALNUT - ENGLISH and BLACK - Very heavy smoke flavor, usually mixed with lighter woods like almond, pear or apple. Can be bitter if used alone. Good with red meats and game.

I have walnut mixed in my wood pile. Whenever I added a walnut log to the fire box it would stink. Not nice at all. I never noticed and bad flavor to the meat, but have since set them aside for fireplace use.

I used it once and the meat made my lips numb!!!! Thought it was something else, used it again, same thing.
I burned a whole barrel full of it in my fire pit!!!!
Nasty stuff in my opinion.
