Operation BBQ for Our Troops: Walter Reed, Wash. DC 8/15/07

Hey guys I'm a first time reader/poster here and was invited to join and make this post by Bill the Grill Guy. Thanks.

Operation BBQ for Our Troops: Walter Reed, Wash. DC 8/15/07

Purpose: "To honor those who protect our freedoms, and their loved ones, with the hospitality of the uniquely American meal of BBQ."

Where: Walter Reed Army Medical Center

When: Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

Who: 500 Wounded Soldiers, Their Family and Care Providers

What: BBQ Food, Entertainment, Supports and LOVE!

We Need Your Support for Our Troops!

My name is Michael Hedrick and my Pit Pirate BBQ Team is working with the USO of Metropolitan Washington DC and "Operation BBQ for Our Troops" to provide an afternoon of down home BBQ for the wounded Soldiers at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. We are scheduled for Wednesday, August 15th on the grounds of the Hospital where we will bring pull behind Competition BBQ Smokers and cook on site for the Troops. We plan on providing all the food as well as all the logistics and even Entertainment and more.

We really need YOUR support as I have been told the 260 Chairs, Three Tents, Stage and Sound System could be as much as $6,000 and that's not even food yet. I am looking for donations financially as well as Products and Services.

Please Help us because these young men and women have paid such a dear price for what we enjoy everyday and they deserve to be told so face to face while holding a nice plate of American BBQ made with love. What a blessing it will be for them and for us as well.

For More Information please contact

Hey Mike. Some of the guys at my Fire Department want to donate to the Operation BBQ. I have started collecting the money and am keeping track of the names. How do you want me to get you the money eventually?

Ok, I'm back on this ballz to the wall.

My Momma and her fall took up some of my time and attention but she's home and healing and I saw her yesterday and she looked terrible until you got to the twinkle in her eyes and smile on her face. It will take much from her and more prayers but she'll be fine.

I take tuesdays and wendesdays off [like yer ever off when self unemployed] so today I am off to hit up about 6 Marina owners for some cash as well as other local business for services and goods.

I have a guy working with me on getting either donated tents and tables or a very reduced price.

I've heard from the guys that did this last time and they have 14 people, 3 rigs and donations for food and stuff.

There will be an email going out later this morning to pull everyone together on the same page so if you are planning on helping make sure I have yer email addy.

pitpiratebbq@comcast.net that comes to my Treo750 phone anytime
thehedricks2@comcast.net is my standard addy

Everytime I think I have the stuff I want to do I come up with more. I just love them soldiers and will give this 150%!!

Thanks folks
mike

Here is what I just emailed to everyone.

Quote:
Hey guys,

First of all thanks for helping the troops just have a great day of good ole American BBQ Food, some friendship, thanks and smiles. With your help and that of the Lord we will be able to provide that and so much more. When I first took this on I knew I "Had" to do it but didn't know how. With your phone calls and emails I saw that this was a no brain'r and we could "Get'r Done" so to speak. Thanks!

I've pretty much picked us a standard menu to cook for them. These are what we do all the time as BBQ folks and all but the Butts for the pulled pork can be made on site. The cold sides we will make ahead of time at my partner Tim Bauckman's restaurant. We'll make them and individually pack them and keep cold for quick, clean and easy serving. Baked beans I say we cook in someone's cooker as we'll have maybe too many of them. Here's the menu guys.

Menu:

* Carolina Pulled Pork Sammys
* Smoked & Grilled Chicken
* BBQ Baked Beans
* Cole Slaw
* Potato Salad
* Tossed Garden Salad
* Rolls
* Hamburger & Hot Dogs
* Sodas, Teas & Water

*And who knows what them crazy
BBQ Teams will bring and cook up special.

Today I'll be working with Local Businessmen on collecting the funds needed to get this done. I want extra money because I'd like to do so volunteer t-shirts as well as having some for the wounded. I have a screen printer that will work with me on getting this done. I have Greg Smith of James Creek Marina helping me get a better price on all the tents and such and will have my brother Terry Hedrick supply the Sound PA System for the Bands, Entertainers and Invocation by my Pastor Alf Austin.

Below I will list what I know about you guys and your capabilities as best as I know so we can narrow this down. If it's not right just correct me like my beautiful wife Michele does...with love!

Bill, because you are a MOD at www.bbq-4-u.com we will use that forum if everyone doesn't mind to make arrangements. and I will also update this email thread as well. Feel free to contact me and now I gotta go get busy!

Thanks TEAM!

Got the email. I am staying with my SIL in North Arlington. She lives just off of 66 near Arlingtong Hospital. I apreciate the offer.

By the way, I have taken in some cash donations and my Parents want to contibute to the food. Do you want me to just get a case of butts and some chicken here to bring up with the money I get?
