Must be the kind used for sat. images

It's just a demo for QTVR (QuickTime Virtual Reality).

They take a series of shots from different angles and depths and spline them together.
That one was just a panorama, here's a 360' of Time Square.

Maybe not as impressive on the Zoom level, but same technology.

When they say "gigapixel", they're talking about the image itself, and not the camera that took it.

I made a few panos like that of the beach... I don't have a mac so had to use other software... I had a virtual reality art musium too.. now that was cool...LOL.. Nice post JB..
