Captain Morgan
Chef Extraordinaire
had a party tonight and I'm home early, but I'm feeling good. Popped a few beers before I went. Been watching Turner Classic Movies, they've been showing great movies in the afternoon over the past few days (Dirty Dozen, African Queen, Ice Station Zebra)...anyway, I'm watching Rooster Cogburn right before I go to this party today, and TCM shows a nice little piece saluting all the stars and movie makers who died in 2006.
There were some great memories as they showed clips of some great stars and lesser known actors whose faces I remembered, set to music.
We lost Glenn Ford, Jack Palance, Shelley Winters, Red Buttons, Darrin McGavin who played the dad in A Christmas Story, Peter Boyle who played the Monster in Young Frankenstein and Nick's dad in Everybody
Loves Raymond...
And then, towards the end, they showed a clip of Don Knotts from Mr.
Limpett, and I got a lump in my throat. I remembered when he died,
Scotty Da Q sent me a great avatar for me to use of the Mayberry
Sheriff's badge with a black band around it.
I had the honor of meeting Mr. Knotts, and most of you know what a huge fan I am of the Andy Griffith Show. So as the segment ended, and I
pushed the channel change button and damn if if HBO wasn't showing
Bob Costas' end of the year show, with a clip of the great sports stars that passed away..Cory Lidle's tragic death, etc.
So being home safe and sound, and having a few more beers, I started listening to music that fits my sentimental mood, and wound up with this.
Please indulge me here...Charlie Daniels never released this song,
and no one ever talks about it, but when I get to feeling this way,
I love to turn it up loud. If you can find an mp3 of it on the net, you'll
hear that it's a grand and majestic salute to Carolina. He was born and
raised just outside of Wilmington NC, not far from where I was born.
So I give this to you before I go to bed, hoping you can feel a little
bit of what I'm feeling right now for the land I love...
Carolina (I Remember You) by charlie daniels
The first things I remember are frosty Carolina mornings with a cheery fire
crackling in my mommas big black wood cook stove
I remember snow flakes as big as goose feathers and the moon the color of new
made country butter and a night sky like diamonds against black velvet reaching
from horizon to horizon
I remember when the biggest problems in my barefoot life were sand spurs and
red ant hills
I remember sitting with my grand daddy on the front porch and watching the last
of that magnificent southern sun bleed away into the twilight sky
I remember sunday school and kneeling at the cross and trying to imagine what
God looked like sunday dinner short pants hair cuts and a little puppy my
daddy brought home to me and I remember love
I remember steam puffing fire breathing awesome 10 wheel locomotives and the
conductors watch looked as big as one of my grand mothers biscuits
I remember my mother smiling in a red and white cherckered dress and christmas
always seemed so far away yes I remember you Carolina grand old lady if the
south
I remember you as home
One of the memories that stays on my mind
about an old southern lady that I left behind
is a ramshackle bridge where the deep river winds
and an old two-lane blacktop through the tall long-leaf pines
Carolina, Carolina
You're hard but you're hard to forget
I still remember the magnolia nights
and goosefeather snow flakes in the gray morning light
sandspurs and puppies and red autumn leaves
and the warm lights in the clear night on a cold Christmas Eve
Carolina, Carolina
You're hard but you're hard to forget
Carolina I knew you
before the highways got to you
and I loved you as one of your own
and I still do
Carolina, Carolina
You're hard but you're hard to forget
You're hard To Forget
