Steve...here is waht I do as I use Bush's beans also.

1. Drain most of the bean juice from the can
2. Add 1/2 cup of BBQ sauce
3. mince some onion to tatse
4. Add pork butt or bacon...I tried PP the other day and it was AWESOME!
5. 1 tbsp of yellow mustard
6. 2 tbsp of brown sugar

I like to make them a day ahead of time to let the flavors mix longer.

After I cook the food on the smoker I throw the beans on for an hour or so to get some smoke flavor...also, if you time it right, you can out the beans under pork butts to catch the fat drippings...makes for a nice taste as well!

I'm pretty sure Stogi won't mind me posting his advice.....

Here are several I have made over the years. I have placed in the Top 10 with a couple of these. Most of these are doctored up from Bush's or some other brand. I do have one from scratch and it comes out very good.

When you doctor the beans, I always drain the bean juice. I add other liquids so want to avoid the beans being too soupy.

A couple things I do for every batch of beans.....

Make them ahead, day before is great, and let them get to know each other.

Final tip....cooking low and slow and to NOT touch them until the end. Otherwise, if you stir too often, they turn to mush. The best place to cook them is underneath a roasting pork butt!

Enjoy!

The following 2 I have competed with and placed in the Top 10 a couple of times....

Kevi's Harvest Baked Beans

2 can(s), 28 oz. each Baked beans
1/2 cup BBQ Sauce
1/2 cup Cider vinegar
1/2 cup Maple syrup
1/4 cup Brown sugar
3 teaspoon(s) Dry mustard
2 cup(s) Granny Smith Apple(s), diced
1/2 pound Bacon

PREPARATION:
Combine all ingredients, except bacon, in baking dish.
Place bacon over top of beans. You can also use any leftover BBQ trimmings, either pork or beef, in place of the bacon.
Cook at 275º for about 2 hrs., uncovered.
I also smoke these in my pit and will cook for 3 hours at 225º.

Bruce Cook passed this one our way and I still use it today.....

KC Baked Beans

28 ounce(s) Baked beans
3/4 cup BBQ Sauce
1/2 cup Brown sugar, dark
1 medium Tart apple, chopped, peeled
2 tablespoon(s) Raisins, golden
1 cup Onion(s), chopped
3 slice(s) Bacon, crisp, chopped
4 ounce(s) BBQ trimmings
1 teaspoon Sesame oil

PREPARATION:
Use your choice of baked beans. I use the Bush's with Onions and then skip the onions in the recipe. Also, use your favorite BBQ sauce. For the BBQ trimmings, you can use any leftover pork or beef. You can also substitute 2 TBS of bacon drippings in place of the 3 strips of bacon.
Dice the apples, raisins and onion into sizes the same as the beans.
Mix all together and cook for 2 hours at 275º.
I cook these in the pit for about 3 hours at 225º.

Apple Pie Baked Beans

INGREDIENTS
2 (16 oz) cans pork and beans
½ c. Heinz catsup
1 lb. Ground sausage
1 can apple pie filling
1 medium onion, chopped
½ green pepper
½ c. brown sugar
2 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
2 Tbsp. Mustard (prepared)

DIRECTIONS

Brown sausage, onion and green pepper. Mix in remaining ingredients. Bake at 325º for 1 hour. Serves 12

Salmon's Baked Beans (Rick Salmon)

INGREDIENTS

Two 28 oz.• & one 15 ½ oz cans of Bushs original baked beans
1 12 to 16 ounce bottle barbeque sauce ( I use KC Masterpiece)
½ onion, finely diced
½ green pepper, finely diced
3 celery stalks, finely diced
8 tablespoons of prepared yellow mustard
About 1 pound brown sugar (or what ever it takes to adequately cover)
2 tablespoons powered hickory seasoning (or bbq rub)
2 tablespoon celery seed
1 to 2 pounds of smoked pork or brisket
1 aluminum half steam pan (roughly a 9x13)

DIRECTIONS

Put all the above ingredients in the pan. Mix well. Cover with brown sugar, about ½ to 1 inch thick and do not stir in the brown sugar. Put in smoker for about two to three hours at 200 to 225 degrees, I use hickory wood. Let the brown sugar melt down into the beans. Stirring it in is not necessary.
Can be done in the oven.
Use one of the big industrial cans for two half-steam pans.

I highly reccomend Bill the Grill Guys beans....

Growing up we called these Ginnie Beans

One large can of Show Boat beans (24 servings)
One lb sausage, I like Jimmy Dean
One onion
One green pepper
1 tbs fennel seed
1/4 c brown suger
3/4 c ketchup
1/4 c viniger

Brown the sausage, add the onion pepper and fennel seed. Drain the beans, add to a 1/2 pan and combine all ingrediants. Bake covered at 350 for 45 min or until bubbly.
