Friday evening I said:
(Our weekend getaway is at a ridge-top 1780 log-house B&B overlooking Monterey VA. This weekend is the 50th annual Highland Maple Festival, Highland County's biggest event of the year. Besides sugar camps and crafts and such, there's supposed to be barbecue, so I'll see what I can find.)
Saturday we visited 5 working sugar camps, learning how maple sap is turned into maple syrup. But that's a different story -- I was on the trail of barbecue! And at "Southernmost Maple Products," I found it:

From the window where I ordered our dinners I could see the back of their pit.

The "Maple Pit Cooked BBQ Pork" sandwich, while skimpier than I would serve, was worthy smoked pork with a tasty maple-sweetened sauce.

The sauce.

And that evening I had maple bbq ribs at Mountain Hideaway, one of the eateries in Monterey. They weren't bad, but those ribs never saw a BBQ pit.
