You said that it lacked a "deep smoky flavor". What kind and how much wood did you use?? Mybe you were just lite on the wood.

I was using hickory chunks.

It was only in the smoke for a few hours using this method vs low and slow for 8-10 hours. That was the difference.....I think.... ;)
 
Could you marinate overnight without injection, would that help it with flavor without putting holes that would cause it to leak out? Also, I know it's beef, but would something different have more flavor like chicken broth? I didn't catch the details. Regardless, it looks great.
