That is some good looking chicken.

As an aside -- I'd only heard the term "yardbird" as referring to people, i.e., guys who had just reported for basic and were still in the wandering around stage; and as old prison slang for prisoners.

Does it mean actual birds too? Chicken specifically? Is it regional?

I have always heard chickens refered to as Yard Birds cuz in the old days folks had chickens and guineas loose in the yard.
