New guy from Florida

Hello all... I am from sunny Florida... recently converted from gas grilling to charcoal... I got a Charbroil American Gourmet Deluxe Model 12201776 which is a Smoker, BBQ, and grill... I got it as a fathers day present and i am excited to get her up and running... I am going to clean it and then season the metal and finish before I start grilling with it... I plan using mainly logs/wood chips with some charcoal mixed in... is that a good start for a beginner? Are there any good sticks I should read to help get me started? Thanks and i hope to be here a long time and use some of the tips, techniques, and recipes found here.

Sounds like you've got a few passions, including what you drive! The reading available here is priceless for growing, so dive in, read, Q a lot, and be sure to post pics of the results. This crew can tell you a lot from the pictures alone...

Welcome to this madness we call BBQing.

Where in Florida are ya located? I'm here in Orlando, kinda near that world famous Mouse.

Yep, gas is for your car/truck or for the criminals. Better to cook with wood/wood products. You made a wise decision.

I couldn't find anything on your model of smoker except the Owner's Manual/Assembly Instructions. Charbroil sez it's been discontinued, but parts are still available. (Probably means it's not completely Idiot Proof, and ya could possibly <GASP!> burn yourself if you touch it while it's hot.)

Didja get it new? If ya need that owner's manual, here's the link...

It looks like it'll do what you want, and then some.

Lots of these guys 'round here don't seem to believe ya if'n ya don't post pictures of what you're talkin about, or maybe they just can't read? LOL!

Just remember, if it's not fun, don't do it!

Thanks for the welcomes guys... Bob, I'm from Arcadia, Florida... about 120 miles south of you... I agree with ya about the gas... you aren't referring to the gas for criminals as OC? Just wondering if i have a fellow chain gang soldier here, I've been with DOC for 2 1/2 years... the grill I got today as a fathers day present... it was brand new in the box... I noticed when i registered, like you said, it was discontinued, but parts are still available... I'm big into southern style cooking(Cajun, Paula deen) but I am just learning how to do real southern cooking and i am big into health and fitness and i figured I could smoke/cook my meats/veggies/other items on the grill for both better taste and for the health benefits... I tried one of the banana pudding recipes and it turned out great... going to season my grill and start using it!
