my pot is a 30 quart one and measures 12 inches across. I know it will work vertically but I have the means to do it vertically now. I want to do them horizontally so I save oil and less chance of overflow. just seems like 11.5 inches across would be a tight fit for a turkey. I generally do 12 or so pounders.

I know cliff and others rig up aircraft ss wire to drop them down in. showed my wife that and she didn't like it one bit ;)

As far as the overflow problem and flare ups, I've always just shut the flame off when I lowered the bird in and then re-lit it after I realized I didn't spill any oil. Never had a flare up that way!
