I am looking for a new thermometer to keep in the meat while it smokes. I am using a general polder probe therm but I am tired of waiting for the temp to show. I am thinking about those pen thermometers. Any suggestions for a good, lasting therm??

Get a thermapen. You should be able to judge, or make an educated guess based on experience, about where the meat should be by a certain time so constant monitoring really isn't needed. Only takes 3 seconds to read. Great tool. A must have!!!

Sorry, I am looking for an digital therm, maybe with a double probe. The therm I have now is not electric. Something that will last. I had a weber one but it was junk. And i was going to replace the current therm with a pen therm. So to rephrase, a digital therm. Thanks!

you want a Maverick.

Is that Knopfler? Glad someone else appreciates him.

Yes, it's Knopfler. Is there anyone else?[/quote:3d0zb3wc]
have you heard anything from the cd he did with emmylou harris? good stuff.[/quote:3d0zb3wc]

I haven't heard it yet but I hear it's good. I've just been listening to the old stuff lately. I recently learned he released a Greatest Hits Private Investigations just last year which has all his stuff (straits music, movie soundtracks, newer solo stuff etc) I'll be picking that up.

Take a look here! http://www.thermoworks.com/products/low ... otemp.html

I bought one of these last year and use it along with my thermpen. They are great! It doesn't have a remote that beeps that you can take along but it does have an alarm that you can set for both high & low temp readings.

Are you able to hear the alarm if you are inside?? Or do you just check the temp periodically??

If you use it like a maverick, you will have to order the other probe for it. I ordered 3 probes so when I'm cook a couple of butts, I just put one probe in each. I hook the thermo up to the probe in the smallest piece of meat. Then just plug different probes in when you want to see the temps of the pieces of meat.

So the unit has the ability to have more than 1 probe in it??

thanks for the link....i actually pulled the trigger on an ET-73 from giftsngadgets for $39.99. shipping was $7.52 :ack: Can't imagine this thing weighing in more than 2lbs and costing about $5 to ship postal. Anyway, the price you pay to buy online. I will be looking for a deal on pen therms. Anyone found any good deals??

We are looking into a thermapen as well....

Wittdog,

After using Uncle Bubba's this past weekend, I am nearly convinced that Thermapen is the way to go. Almost instantaneous readout when inserting into meat, minimal open pit time. Now if that's worth $80 to you....their nice but damn.
