Well, years ago when the food network was just a baby, (and Emeril was still watchable) we won tickets to Emeril live. We flew to NY, stood outside to get in for an hour, then we were herded into a small room with folding metel chairs. We were read a set of rules and were offered snacks (lunch size bags of chips). We sat in that room for over two hours, at witch point we were lead into the studio. All the seats on the floor (the tables) were already filled by people enjoying some sort of beverages. 40 min. later, emeril came out and the show started. They have a woman that waves a stick when your supposed to laugh or clap and before the show they tell you to clap and make noise whenever he says garlic, butter etc. At breaks, the band only plays as much as you see on TV, not the whole time. As soon as the show was over, the people from the tables went backstage and we were hearded out a side door. The only nice thing he did was at the 30 min break, he brought all the kids up and gave them ice cream. No food made it past the tables. I have'nt been able to watch the show since...

Author Pat Conroy (Prince of Tides, The Great Santini) has a new book out that is sort of like a rambling cookbook. One of the stories he tells is of being in New Orleans maybe 15 years ago with a party of 8 or so. He was being wooed by a publishing company. Anyway, they all go to this restaurant which was getting rave reviews. As they sit down, his host noticed that there was a sign by the cash register that said no credit cards. They couldn't believe this to be true, and started to order. At some point, the host went up to the cash register and asked to speak to the manager. When he came, he introduced himself as the owner. She explained she didn't have enough cash for a party of 8 at such an elegant restaurant..could he please take a credit card. "No!" he said. "I have to pay my people! You have to pay cash!" So she had to go back to her hotel after dinner, while everyone else had a few cocktails. She got the cash, paid, and everyone agreed it was fabulous. The owner was of course, an up and coming Emeril. They never went back though.
