I don't follow drags, but one of the guys on my engine forum posted this from an internet site.........

I found this on some website. Some of you may have seen it before. I think what's amazing about all of this, that out of all the rocket and jet engine technology out there, that the fastest 1/4 mile car is still with a v-8 engine.




* One dragster's 500-inch Hemi makes more horsepower then the first 8 rows at Daytona.

* Under full throttle, a dragster engine consumes 1 1/2 gallons of nitro per second, the same rate of fuel consumption as a fully loaded 747 but with 4 times the energy volume.

* The supercharger takes more power to drive than a stock hemi makes.

* Even with nearly 3000 CFM of air being rammed in by the supercharger on overdrive, the fuel mixture is compressed into nearly-solid form before ignition. Cylinders run on the verge of hydraulic lock.

* Dual magnetos apply 44 amps to each spark plug. This is the output of an arc welder in each cylinder.

* At stoichiometric (exact) 1.7:1 air/fuel mixture (for nitro), the flame front of nitromethane measures 7050 degrees F.

* Nitromethane burns yellow. The spectacular white flame seen above the stacks at night is raw burning hydrogen, dissociated from atmospheric water vapor by the searing exhaust gases.

* Spark plug electrodes are totally consumed during a pass. After 1/2 way, the engine is dieseling from compression-plus the glow of exhaust valves at 1400 degrees F. The engine can only be shut down by cutting off its fuel flow.

* If spark momentarily fails early in the run, unburned nitro builds up in those cylinders and then explodes with a force that can blow cylinder heads off the block in pieces or blow the block in half.

* Dragsters twist the crank (torsionally) so far (20 degrees in the big end of the track) that sometimes cam lobes are ground offset from front to rear to re-phase the valve timing somewhere closer to synchronization with the pistons.

* To exceed 300mph in 4.5 seconds dragsters must accelerate at an average of over 4G's. But in reaching 200 mph well before 1/2 track, launch acceleration is closer to 8G's.

* If all the equipment is paid off, the crew worked for free, and for once NOTHING BLOWS UP, each run costs $1000.00 per second.

* Dragsters reach over 300 miles per hour before you have read this sentence.

At Norwalk Raceway Park in Ohio you used to be able to be within about 6-8 feet of a top fuel dragster at full throttle. I'm telling you...there is nothing else like it in the world. The sound waves will literally vibrate your internal organs like nothing else. It is the most awesome thing I have ever had the experience of witnessing. If you have never seen a pair of dragsters of top fuel funny cars make a run...do it.

Also, nitromethane only ignites when under compression.

Also, Bandimere Speedway is only a couple miles from here. Ive been a few times and it is Awesome but I can only watch them run a 3-4 second straight line so many times.......make em go in a circle and I could watch all day. How does that figure? :shock:
 
Drag racing has advanced since I was a teenager. I remember when Art Arfons reached a record 150 mph in the quarter, in whatever number Green Monster that was. And then when Don Garlits broke 200 mph, which for many years was considered "the barrier".

Don't worry though Larry, it'll never vibrate through that oversized melon you call a head. Christ, that skull has to be 3" thick. Certainly not full of gray matter. You were great as a stunt double for the kid in "Mask".
 
I grew up Drag racing, I used to have a 10sec big block Camaro.
Sold it years ago, Its an EXPENSIVE hobby :shock:

It was lots O fun
 
Go on Saturday. You'll see more cars trying to make the field. Go to the fuel pits and watch them tear these motors down between runs. Be sure to be there for warm ups. That is the best there is. Plug your nose...nitro fumes are wicked. ;) :LOL:
