Use them with the sand. Works for me. ;)
Cut the bricks in half unless you can find the smaller ones already split.

Yes I do Cliff for a variety of reasons. Over time the sand will turn into concrete and you can't clean or remove it from the pan, with bricks they won't. If the waterpan were to ever fall all you've have to pick up is two bricks versus a bunch of sand. I just prefer the bricks now after using them. Two full firebricks "white" will fit into the bottom of the pan without cutting, they will not lay perfectly flat, but leaves adequate room for drippings. Are there any actual cooking advantages to one over the other, no.

I've had them in the Primo at 550* for pizza cooks and haven't had one crack yet, but I suppose they could. If so the pieces will fit fine in the water pan too.
