My friend and neighbor Oreste cleaning out the barrel with water and rocks inside the barrel. He said this is the way he does it in Italy.

The barrel is originally from Jerez, Spain. It used to have Brandy in it from the Spanish Bodega (winery) Bobadilla & Co. It was shipped to Amsterdam, The Netherlands. You can see the family crest that was stamped into the wood.

This is a brandy label from the company Bobadilla & Co. The family crest is top middle.

The barrel was in the basement of a friends family's farm. His father used to make Apple wine in it. It was 3/4 full when we opened it. I guess it had been sitting for at least 8 yrs. Lot's of gunk when we drained it.

More to follow as the build progresses.

Looks real good. I'll use a pressure washer again on the inside, then varnish the barrel  and paint the metal.

Smoke!!!!!!!!
411_PIC_1658_1.jpg

At 30 min with the all 3 vents open the temp hit 250F. Closed 1.

At 45 min 226F with 2 open, one closed.

At 1 hr, 240F 2 open, 1/2 closed.

1hr 20, 256F, 2 open, 3/4 closed

So far so good!!!

I have to call this build a sucess! The temps finally settled around 240F - 250F with 2 vents open. Max temp was 288F. I threw 2 bratwursts on late in the game. Most of the smoke was gone but they got a decent ring.

Very cool smoker and conversation piece. I would love to do that with a Jack Daniels barrel.
