I wanted to see what all the comotion was about with the Ugly Drum Smoker. So I built one. It took about $120 in parts and the drum and took about 12 beers to build it. It can be built for less $$ but I opted for the brand new drum and had to have a little chrome 8) I also did quite a bit of braising (Charcoal basket & the nipples) but this cooker can be made without doing that.
I haven't painted it yet (optional) but I don't think a turbo heater and paint fumes would mix to well in my garage.
I'm gonna' season it up this weekend and get her cooking.

I'd like to thank Cliff H. and BBQ Bubba for countless tips and info.
I really appreciate it guys ;)

Braising the expanded metal for the charcoal basket

Braising the nipples on

Because of this......

We added this handle for easy removal of the basket

Charcoal basket

Top cooking grate

A handle for the lid. A little chrome and she's ready to cook 8)

Nice job Puff, looks great!!
Wait till ya fire that baby up, just don't tell the OL that it doesn't need to be looked after all day, she might find something for ya to do!

Gotta get Bruce to build one now!!

so the valve controls the draft?

Cool idea
Yep. There's 2 other nipples with caps that can be removed for more or less airflow. Real easy to make Chuck, give it a try ;)

You are going to want to attatch something to the bottom of your fire grate or at the very least put a pan of some kind in the bottom to catch the ash.

Turning the can upside down to dump the ash will work for about two cooks, then you will be thinking of a better way.

I love that chrome exhaust stack.

Paul, cut a 1/4 off the bottom of a 30 gallon drum and weld a few handles on it will fit right in the 55. :D

I have an extra drum, and I would like to make one of these. I would prefer to find a different drum that contained some type of food. The drum I have has pump able mold sealer in it.

Got any good tips on a drum that contained a food product?
Check any bakeries or any other food making place in your area.
You might be able to score a free one that way.

Good idea Chris. I'll have to measure to see if that would block the intakes at all. First thing I have to do is get some wheels on this thing

Time for the first burn. I loaded the basket full of lump and let her rip wide open to burn off goop on the inside.
After this I'll rub it down with vegatable oil and let it season for a bit.
You know I swear I saw some blue smoke coming out already :D
